Yes, that's right. In webcomics, ALL Mikes are assholes. Pretty much.
(That's in WEBCOMICS, though. I'm not passing judgement on any nonfictional Mikes!)
You might think there are exceptions, but the seemingly "nice Mikes" are actually just lying in wait. If you remain vigilant, even the nicest Mikes reveal their inner darkness. It's important to note that different Mikes come in different levels of assholery. Some of them are worse than others. Some of them act like assholes, but are good at heart. Some of them were once assholes, but have reformed to become better people. Some of them are extras who have appeared as characters only long enough for us to find out their name. Obviously, not all of them will be *total* assholes. If I were to pick one out of all of them to be the Ultimate Asshole- the Alpha> Asshole, if you will- I'd definitely choose David Willis' Mike of It's Walky and Shortpacked, a major character Mike who despite plenty of comic appearance and even involvement in some uberdramatic storylines has managed to keep from becoming a complex character. He's a pure asshole, and for that he gets the crown.recurring asshole character just for the sake of being an asshole. But most Mikes are not so pure.
Consider this- what if we meet a character named Mike who shows up once and never is shown again... and in that one appearance, he does something rude, selfish, or cruel? We don't know anything about him. That could be his only transgression. Perhaps if we followed that Mike around for a day we'd find that he just hadn't had his morning coffee yet and spends most of his time volunteering to take care of orphan children. Would he still count as an asshole?
Of course not.
But consider that we never see that Mike again. Because he is a fictional character, that's all he gets. That is this Mike's ENTIRE LIFE. His one-panel assholery. Does he count as an asshole? Of course. In fact he's all the more of an asshole, because that's all the identity he has. Most Mikes in webcomics are like that. See below and judge for yourself. Here is a list of all the asshole Mikes I've found in webcomics, including the ones in the comic above:
---A one-comic Mike in The Devil's Panties exists only long enough to stare blatantly at Summer's breasts. STATUS: ASSHOLE.
---Mike from the storyline comics of Gaia Online is a bit of an asshole on the very rare occasions that we see him. In the only dialogue he is ever given he flirts with Cindy Donovinh in a way that some may consider sexual harassment. It's a bit of a jump to classify him as an asshole just for that- but again, as that is all we have seen of him, it counts. STATUS: ASSHOLE.
---Mike from Goats for corrupting puppets STATUS: ASSHOLE.
---Mike from It's Walky and Shortpacked is the Ultimate Asshole of webcomics. Mike is utterly unredeemable and unapologetic. As his cast page entry says on Shortpacked, "Mike is rumored to have ruined a five-year-old girl's birthday party by training a fleet of squirrels to publically mate with her mother (up the butt, probably) at the dinner table in front of her and her friends. This was not to make himself feel superior. This was not a power trip. Mike is just an asshole. Claim anything else, and you're reaching." He becomes very kind and good-natured while drunk, but he never gets drunk intentionally. STATUS: ASSHOLE.
---Mike from Least I Could Do. Only a minor character, LICD's works at the Space Camp where Rayne takes Ashley. He sneers at Rayne and Ashley for being inferior to himself and his partner in the competitive NASA training events, and is apparently the Top Scorer for said events four years running. Rayne gets back at him by using his executive position at IDS Enterprises to keep Mike from getting hired. STATUS: ASSHOLE.
---Mike from Mac Hall STATUS: ASSHOLE.
---Mike from Scary Go Round is a reporter that works with Shelley. The first time we see him, he is trying to get into her pants. Since then the only other personality traits he has shown are snippyness and sloth. STATUS: ASSHOLE.
---Mike of Stuff Sucks. STATUS: ASSHOLE.
---Mike Midgetski from Sluggy Freelance. Sluggy's Mike is one of Zoe's two radio cohosts, Broadman and Midget. One of them is stocky and the other is very short, so Zoe initially assumed Broadman was the big one. In truth, "Midget" was short for Midgetski, the stocky cohost's last name (the short one was named Broadman). Broadman is much more of an asshole than Mike Midgetski, but Mike has also been pretty crude around Zoe, especially before his name is revealed. STATUS: ASSHOLE.
---Mike from College Roomies From Hell is one of the most well-known asshole Mikes, and is mentioned in the comic above. In the comic this link goes to, Mike is trying to kill his roommate, Dave. This storyline is seen by most fans as some of Mike's worst assholery. However, even though he is usually a manipulative bastard, in this situation Mike means well... sort of. He attacks Dave because he believes Dave forces Blue (Mike's sister) to kiss him. He does not tell Dave why he's attacking him, he just attacks. The truth is that Blue forced Dave to kiss her. Mike is an asshole, but he acts in defense of his sister... he does a bad thing for a good (albeit incorrect) reason. Mike is undeniably an asshole on the surface, but deep down- very deep down- he is very protective of his friends. STATUS: ASSHOLE, BUT COMPLEX CHARACTER.
---Mike from Penny Arcade. Yes, there is a Mike in Penny Arcade... you know him as Gabe. It's common knowledge that Gabe is based off of Michael Krahulik, who draws PA. (UH-DUUUUUUUUUH!) What many people don't realize is that the character Gabe actually is (sometimes) named Mike. The comic goes back and forth between his "real" name being Mike Krahulik and John Gabriel. As far as I can tell, Gabe's ACTUAL name is Mike, but the only one who actually knows him as Mike is his wife, Kara (who also has called Tycho Jerry). No one but Tycho and Gabe know for sure... after all, Penny Arcade doesn't take continuity very seriously. All the same, it's shown from time to time in the comics, such as here and most notably here. (For the record, I'm NOT saying that the real Mike Krahulik is an asshole. I don't know the guy well enough to make that assumption, and I love Penny Arcade.) At any rate, it's certainly true that while one may contest whether the character of Gabe is actually named Mike, few would argue that he is an asshole. STATUS: ASSHOLE, BUT UNIQUE CIRCUMSTANCES.
---Uncle Mike from You Damn Kid. Uncle Mike is truly less of an asshole than he is sleazy, creepy, and completely without a sense of propriety. So perhaps he doesn't belong on this list per se, but if he isn't an asshole he's certainly something. STATUS: NOT EXACTLY AN ASSHOLE.
---Mike from Prismatic Vodka
---Eggplant Mike of Spamusement... I'm pretty sure it doesn't count as an asshole (the title of the comic says right there that is "so good" to the narrator!), but... it is seriously fucking creepy. STATUS: WTF?!.
---A Mike is shown in an early Whispered Apologies comic, written by Ryan North. Mike is only shown for that one comic, looking at a woman getting naked on his computer. Whether the woman he is watching is a pornographic model or he has set up a webcam to watch her is not made clear, and it is possible that the entire scenario is in his imagination. Despite this, we can guess certain things about Mike's character from the last panel, in which it is hinted that he should not be watching and continues to do so anyway. STATUS: POSSIBLY ASSHOLE.
---Mike from Something Positive is another legendary asshole Mike. Once, SP's Mike (Mike Dowden) was second only to It's Walky's Mike in assholery. However, Mike Dowden was an asshole mostly as a result of his selfishness and ignorance, rather than just for the sake of being an asshole. Over the course of th comic Mike managed to make enemies of everyone around him with his sexist, paranoid attitude. Through it all two people continued to treat him decently: Branwen, his cousin, and PeeJee, who Mike hated. Eventually he grew to respect PeeJee and became infatuated with her, and this motivated him to try and become a better person. He made excellent use of his last "second chance" and now is on his way to no longer being an asshole. He has a girlfriend, a moderate social life, and a fairly good job, and has been promoted from "asshole" to "occasionally sexist and selfish". STATUS: MOSTLY REFORMED.
---Mike from Zebra Girl is initially shown as a bit of an asshole. He acts friendly to Sandra in an attempt to manipulate her into revealing what she is. His intentions are not exactly cruel- he's only curious- but he treats her as if she were not a person and toys with her emotions. He hurts her pretty badly when, after she grows to like him, he pries too much and gives away his true attitude. Later, though, he feels remorse and is still interested in Sandra. Upon realizing what Sandra was and how lonely she was, he regrets what he did. The next time Sandra meets Mike she is temporarily in her human form again, and learns how he feels. STATUS: REFORMED.
---Though it isn't a webcomic, it's interesting to note that Booster Gold's actual name is Mike.
In truth, though, this is not entirely fair. Yes, I have said that all Mikes are assholes... but there ARE exceptions that make the rule, and it wouldn't be fair if I just pretended they didn't exist. So, listed here are the Mikes that truly do not count as assholes.
---Mike of The Gods of Arr-Kelaan. This Mike is the god of Honor/Valor. Like all the other gods, when Mike woke up on Arr-Kelaan he found that he had all sorts of powers. He had become a god, but he didn't realize that- he thought he'd become a mutant, so he took on the identity of a superhero and used his powers to fight crime and protect people. And he really doesn't do anything wrong. Once he realizes his role as a guardian superhero might be unhealthy for the city's cultural development, he continues helping them in subtle ways, reforming criminals and teaching them how to defend the innocent himself. STATUS: NOT AN ASSHOLE.
---Electron Mike of Diesel Sweeties was originally listed as an asshole for his involvement in the break-up of Clango and Maura Glee. However, after careful consideration I've decided that it doesn't count. First of all, Maura and Clango's break-up was ultimately a good thing, as it caused Clango to develop a relationship with Pale Suzie, a far better match for him. Secondly, Maura was the cheater in the scenario, and was largely to blame for all of it. Electron Mike is socially inept and loves his computers far more than any human, but he's not an asshole. He's just weird. STATUS: NOT AN ASSHOLE.
---A Mike was shown briefly in YU+ME as Donovan's former roommate. We never learn enough about him to see whether he is or isn't an asshole. There's really no evidence either way. STATUS: POSSIBLY ASSHOLE.
More will be added as I find them... if you know some asshole webcomic Mikes I don't have listed, email me with them at jamie@sushidatabase.com!
